Mustangs comeback against Broncos on Teddy Bear Toss night

The Melfort Mustangs had to rally back Friday night at home, in their first meeting of the season with the Humboldt Broncos.

Melfort trailed 2-0 after the first period but were able to pull off the comeback and win the game 3-2.

“It wasn’t looking too good to start, and then Blevs gave us a good ripping into in the intermission there, and then we came back hard and tied it up, and then eventually got the win,” said Mustangs’ forward Ashton Hutchinson.

“I think the main thing was that we just weren’t hitting and working hard enough, they just gave it to us in the first period and we just sat back, but then we finally woke up.”

It was Hutchinson who grabbed some momentum for his team in the second period, as his goal sent the stuffed animals flying on Teddy Bear Toss night.

From there it was Zayden Sadlemyer who tied it later on in the period before Hutchinson and Logan Belton helped set up the winning goal for Zac Somers in the third.

“I thought that goal was big for us and for me too, all the boys were down, but we started to roll after that one. It was an awesome goal to score, never done that (the teddy bear goal) before, so it was fun,” added Hutchinson.

“I think our comeback is just kudos to our leadership and our guys that step up and bring us back into the game… we seem to like tight games.”

Now on an 11-game heater, the Stangs will travel to Humboldt Saturday looking for the weekend sweep over the Broncos.

Nothing will come easy though at the Elgar Petersen Arena, which the Blue and Green are aware of, as it never does.

“It’s gonna be another battle, we don’t like them and they don’t like us, so it’ll be fun,” Hutchinson concluded. “Just wanna hit them more than they hit us and score more goals than they do.”

Puck drop at the EPA is set for 7:00 p.m.
