Another name has been added to the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ stable of quarterbacks.

The CFL club has traded for the negotiation rights of Calgary Stampeders quarterback Jake Maier in exchange for an eighth-round pick in the 2025 CFL Draft.

Maier is set to become a free agent in February.

In 2023, Maier became the Stamps’ starter after the team elected to move off of Bo Levi Mitchell in favour of the younger pivot. In that season he became the tenth player in Stampeders’ history to throw for 4,000 yards in a single season, finishing with 4,244 yards and 15 touchdowns.

But wins have been tough to come by for the quarterback, with the Stamps going 11-24 over those two seasons. Maier was also benched at one point in the 2024 season.

At the collegiate level, Maier played 36 games over three seasons (2017-19) at the University of California, Davis, where he completed 992 passes for 11,163 yards and threw 88 touchdowns.

Maier joins Trevor Harris, Jack Coan and Michael Hiers as quarterbacks currently under contract with the club. Shea Patterson, who was the primary backup and short-yardage quarterback in 2024, is set to become a free agent in February.
