Year in Review: Municipal elections held in northeast

Dec 24, 2024 | 2:00 PM

A significant local story in 2024 was the municipal elections held across the province in November.

MELFORT

In Melfort, Glenn George was re-elected as mayor. He was elected by acclamation, running unopposed.

The new council is made up of Adrian Bourgeois, Brian Enge, Rick Fettis, Seth MacNaughton, Trent Mitchell, and Tara Muntain. Enge, Mitchell, and Muntain were incumbent candidates, MacNaughton had been a councillor several times in the past, and Bourgeois and Fettis are first-time councillors.

HUMBOLDT

Rob Muench was elected as mayor in Humboldt. Muench had previously served as mayor from 2016-2020, and has served as councillor in the city, including from 2020-2024.

He won by over 200 votes over his closest competitor.

“I’d like to thank everybody that put their trust in me here and voted for me again,” Muench said on election night. “It’s going to be a lot of work to do, so I’m looking forward to it.”

Incumbent Michael Behiel chose not to run in the election.

NIPAWIN

Incumbent Marlon Zacharias easily won re-election as mayor in November, after winning a byelection a year earlier following the resignation of Rennie Harper.

Zacharias told northeastNOW on election night that he was looking forward to working with council and administration for a full four-year term.

“It’s great to know that I’ve earned the community’s trust after a short first year,” said Zacharias.

TISDALE

Roy Skoglund was elected as mayor in Tisdale in a battle of first-time candidates.

Skoglund won by more than 600 votes over his opponent, Devon Schwanke.

Incumbent mayor Al Jellicoe elected not to run for re-election.
