Humboldt mayor Rob Muench excited for continued growth in 2025

The mayor of Humboldt is weighing in on 2024 in the city and what’s to come in the next 12 months.

Rob Muench was elected in November’s municipal election. It will be his second term as mayor, having previously served from 2016-2020.

Muench told northeastNOW the city has made substantial progress in 2024 as they look to continue to build for future growth.

Two main infrastructure projects include the Carl Schenn Dry Pond Project, which was undertaken to help deter flooding in the residential areas near the park after heavy rainfall events.

“Now we can keep the water back after a big storm before we release it into the storm system,” said Muench.

The dry pond project also led to improved landscaping, with trail paving, grass seeding and tree and shrub planting. The soccer fields will also be moved back into the area.

The $40 million wastewater treatment project is also underway to improve their lagoon. Muench called it the largest infrastructure project in the city’s history. The city has also completed several paving projects like 12th Ave. and 4th Ave.

Muench said the city and developers continue to work on the Northwest Area Structure Plan that will develop lots, with the goal to “provide relevant developers with insight into the extent to which the Northwest Area can be serviced using existing infrastructure.” Over 1000 housing units are expected in that area, according to Muench.

The city has obtained the Housing Accelerator Fund grant of nearly $2.3 million to implement initiatives in the city’s housing plan. They hope to spur development by offering a 3-year tax exemption on new builds. Muench said building permits went up from about $20 million in 2023 to $30 million in 2024.

The city will also be putting up the Jacob Leight Memorial Outdoor Rink and Multi-Sport Court. The outdoor rink will open this winter, with the courts opening in late spring. The facility is named in honour of Jacob Leight, a Humboldt Bronco who lost his life in the tragic 2018 bus crash. The project was funded through a government grant and a contribution from the Humboldt Broncos Memorial Golf Tournament.
