Guns seized during New Year’s Eve check stops in Prince Albert

Jan 1, 2025 | 6:08 PM

Two separate traffic stops in Prince Albert on New
Year’s Eve, resulted in members of the city’s police service finding a gun inside the vehicle.

During the first check stop incident, which was conducted alongside MADD Prince Albert, a male driver blew a warning during an alcohol screening test. Officers asked him to exit the vehicle and while doing so, observed a bottle of alcohol on the passenger side of the vehicle. Officers then learned the male’s license had been previously suspended and he was unauthorized to be operating a motor vehicle.

The male was arrested and upon further search of his vehicle, ammunition, and a firearm were located. As a result, the 31-year-old man is facing numerous weapons and firearms charges, as well as being in possession of a controlled substance (cocaine and methamphetamine).

A different male driver going through a PA Police check stop also blew a warning on an alcohol screening test. Officers also observed open alcohol in the vehicle. While removing the male from the vehicle, officers observed what appeared to be a firearm behind one of the rear occupants of the vehicle. All four occupants were arrested at the scene. The firearm was seized by police.

As a result, a 26-year-old man is facing multiple firearms charges, as well as failure to comply with an undertaking.

Over the course of the final hours of 2024 and first morning of the new year, members of the Prince Albert Police Service responded to a total of 77 calls for service, resulting in 13 arrests.

The calls for service included 30 disturbances, six welfare checks, seven arrests related to impaired drivers, four evictions, and two assault calls.
