North Battleford council to set appointments, receive notice of retirement in first regular meeting of 2025

Jan 13, 2025 | 1:07 PM

Committee appointments, the mayor attending an economic development event and the upcoming retirement of a city official are all on the agenda for North Battleford Council this evening.

As the newly elected and re-elected members take their collective seats for the first regular council of 2025, names for representatives have been put forth for a variety of boards and committees.

The two freshmen councillors Dennis Mercer and Rodney Fedler would begin their appointments retroactively from Jan. 1 for a period ending Dec. 31, 2026.

Should his appointment be approved, Mercer’s portfolio will include River Valley Board, Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts, the Community Development Financial Assistance and the REC Group Fundraising Committee. Fedler’s portfolio would consist of Destination Battlefords, Dekker Centre and Concern for Youth.

Meanwhile, Councillor Ross McAngus will be appointed to the River Valley Board, North Battleford Golf and Country Club and Saskatchewan Lotteries.

Mayor Kelli Hawtin is set to attend the International Council of Shopping Centres’ Marketplace Show in Whistler, B.C., later this month as a way to promote North Battleford and attract new business.

According to the agenda package, the annual event brings in vendors, owners, tenants and others from a variety of industries like retail, entertainment and wellness. The annual trip, which has $4,000 of the budget earmarked this year, was attended last year by city staff, the former mayor, and Red Pheasant – the latter of whom will once again be attending.

Lastly, it will be made official: the future retirement of City Manager Randy Patrick now has a date: June 30, 2026. In his letter to mayor and council, he spoke about his being “filled with a mixture of emotions” and that he felt giving extended notice was the least he could do.

“As | embark on this next chapter of my life, I look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead for the city and myself,” he said in the letter.

“I am grateful for the experiences and relationships I‘ve built here and am committed to ensuring a smooth transition for my successor.”
