Prince Albert police officer promoted to black belt

Prince Albert’s newest black belt says he wants to be an ambassador for the sport of brazilian-jiu-jitsu.

Chris Riddell, who trains with Complete Martials Arts, was promoted last weekend at a special event in Regina. The 48-year-old noted Martial Arts has been a part of his life for over 30 years and fondly recalls starting at a judo club in Melfort under then-instructor Bill Selnes.

“I can remember when I started, he was a brown belt and while I was in Melfort, he ended up getting awarded his black belt and I can remember back then how proud he was and how much of an accomplishment it meant to him and I can remember thinking one day I would like that to be a part of my life,” Riddell said.

In addition to judo, Riddell also tried karate and boxing before finding jiu-jitsu and for the past 15 to 20 years has been a dedicated student. Under the tutelage of Professors AJ Scales and Corey Lillis, moved quickly through the ranks.

“As you progress, you see how the sport changes you and how much clarity it gives you in your life,” he explained. “Self-defence aspect is for sure but there’s also the physical fitness and just the comradery that comes with it.”

Further noting that when you become a black belt, you become an ambassador for the sport and have a responsibility to maintain a good reputation, Riddell reflected on the black belts in Prince Albert who have come before him including Jim O’Sullivan, Doyle Ironstand and Mark Anderson.

“You see the individuals they are and that’s who you want to end up being like and teaching your students to be like,” he said.

Riddell’s instructor and friend Corey Lillis said Chris has been a member and a coach from the start.

“He is very dedicated and bring a lot of knowledge and experience. Chris stands out because he remain s consistent in his training and love for jiu jitsu because he truly cares about the progress of the students,” he said. “His teaching style and never quit attitude has made the Academy what it is today.”
