Updated: Travel not recommended around Battlefords area
With heavy snow and winds expected to gust up to 80 km/h Thursday evening, motorists are being advised to stay off of area highways.
As of 8:30 p.m., travel was not recommended on Hwy 4, Hwy 16, Hwy 29 and Hwy 40 in every direction surrounding North Battleford. Conditions on the provincial Highway Hotline reported swirling snow, ice and zero visibility.
Environment Canada issued a blowing snow advisory for the area Thursday afternoon. Poor visibility in blowing snow was expected throughout the night, however, conditions are expected to improve by Friday morning as winds weaken and snow tapers off.
Drivers are being encouraged to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Environment Canada also suggested ensuring that shelter is provided for pets and outdoor animals.
