Two teens charged in North Battleford taxi robbery

Two teenagers are facing robbery charges after a taxi driver was threatened and had their cab stolen on January 19.

According to a police report, Battlefords RCMP responded to an armed robbery report on 110 Street in North Battleford that morning, where they determined the two suspects threatened a taxi driver and stole the vehicle. The driver was uninjured.

After receiving the report, officers found the abandoned cab on Mosquito, Grizzly Bear’s Head, Lean Man First Nation. They called in Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services to help locate the suspects.

While tracking the suspect, officers encountered a man walking in the snow, who was promptly arrested at the scene. Meanwhile, the other suspect was located inside a nearby home. Despite resisting arrest and spitting at one of the officers, he was successfully apprehended without harming anyone.

Also, the officers later located and seized bear spray in the abandoned taxi cab.

As a result of further investigation, an 18-year-old man from North Battleford is charged with one count of robbery, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, and one count of using a disguise with intent to commit an offence.

The other suspect a 17-year-old from North Battleford, is charged with robbery, one count of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, one count of resist/obstruct peace officer, one count of assault on a police officer, one count of carrying a concealed weapon, and three counts of failing to comply with release order condition.

Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, police cannot identify the 17-year-old suspect in public documents.

Both are set to appear in North Battleford Provincial Court on Wednesday.
