Housing units burned in fire ready for new tenants

On Friday, 12 newly rebuilt public housing units in Prince Albert will be ready for their first tenants to move in.

The provincial government invested $3.3 million to rebuild the complex, which includes two- and three-bedroom social housing, that was partially burned in a fire several years ago.

“Safe and affordable housing is the foundation for families to thrive and build a better future,” Social Services Minister and Minister Responsible for Saskatchewan Housing Corporation Terry Jenson said in a news release. “This project reflects our ongoing efforts to provide housing that meets the needs of our communities, ensuring families have the stability and opportunity they need to succeed.”

Given the 140 family wait list Prince Albert Housing Authority has, it was not a chore to fill them, said Manager David DeVos on Tuesday, Jan. 28 during the official ribbon cutting.

MLA Alana Ross (Prince Albert – Northcote) said that the new construction shows that the government is committed to housing.

“When we started this project, we knew it was an opportunity to literally build something great from the ashes of a fire. We took into account the challenging demographics and altered Metal Green’s original design to better reflect the needs for Prince Albert families today,” she said.

They heard of the need for larger units, so having three bedrooms became a priority. The building along 15th Street East at the edge of the city, now includes four three-bedroom units and eight two-bedroom units.

“The reconstruction of a portion of the Meadow Green Housing Development reflects our government’s dedication to addressing housing challenges by taking steps to have the right housing available in the right place for individuals and families in the greatest need,” Ross said.
