Residents in Humboldt asked to be cautious around wildlife entering city

The City of Humboldt has issued guidelines to residents about wildlife being within city limits.

A City news release said they have been in contact with conservation officers about the animals, who are likely making their way into populated areas due to the cold temperatures and deep snow.

The presence of the animals may present opportunities for some interesting pictures, the city said in their media release that it’s important to follow safety guidelines.

One of the main messages from the City is for residents to keep their distance from wildlife. Even though animals like deer and moose can appear friendly, they can become aggressive when they feel threatened.

Motorists are also asked to pay extra close attention while driving, especially during dawn and dusk. Areas close to parks or green space can be sites where animals are more prevalent.

Residents are also being asked to secure their garbage cans or other potential wildlife food sources. Pet owners are reminded to keep their furry friends on a leash.

“Unleashed pets may startle or provoke wildlife, leading to dangerous encounters,” said the release.

The City also asks people who see any wildlife that exhibit aggression or distress to report the sightings to local animal control or conservation officers. You can also call the Turn in Poachers and Polluters (TIPP) line at 1-800-667-7561.
