The Melfort Métis Local 22 is holding a Traditional Winter Activities event at the Spruce Haven Recreation Area this weekend.

The event will be held Saturday, March 8, starting at 11 a.m.

Local President Ashlee Boucher told northeastNOW the event started in Porcupine Plain with the Métis Nation of Saskatchewan’s Eastern Region II office.

“I had a lot of people saying they would like to see something like that come to Melfort, so I tried to arrange it and make it happen,” said Boucher.

The Traditional Trapper’s Tent will be set up, starting at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and everyone is invited to watch that happen. Boucher said they have arranged for kickboards and snowshoes to be available, on behalf of the City of Melfort.

The Métis Local 22 is also asking people to bring their own skates for the outdoor rink to have a skate.

“We’re suggesting people bring their skates and skate, as long as it’s cool enough that the ice isn’t melting,” Boucher said.

She added the city will be flooding the rink this week as long as the weather permits.

There is also a fire pit at the Spruce Haven Recreation Area, and the Métis Local will be bringing hot dogs to roast. Boucher said people can come spend some time by the fire, have a hot dog and some hot chocolate, and visit. They can also take part in any of the activities taking place.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday.
