Mustangs begin Round 2 against Terriers tonight

Apr 4, 2025 | 3:14 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will host the Yorkton Terriers tonight for their Round 2 playoff series.

Just four teams remain now in the SJHL playoffs as the winner of this series will play in the league finals.

“Back to it here, practiced here this week and getting excited to start off this weekend,” said Mustangs’ captain Ty Thornton. “Playoffs are a process, you take it one step at a time and we got through the first round, so now it’s game by game and shift by shift, and hopefully, that’ll lead to a second round win and take us on to the third.”

Melfort is coming off a 4-1 series win over the Kindersey Klippers, while Yorkton also took down the Melville Millionaires in five games.

During the regular season, the Stangs won all four matchups with the Terriers, and Thornton knows they’ll have to play their best if they want to continue to pick up the victories.

“I expect us to play as heavy as we can, Yorkton is a good, fast-paced, and skilled team, so I think we’re gonna be successful if we stick to our game and stick to our physicality and our weight. Our game is finishing checks, taking our lines, and playing smart that way. If we take pride in our D-zone, play tough in our end, and take it to the middle in the O-zone, I think we’re going to be a successful team,” Thornton added.

“Definitely our D-zone structure and taking care of people in front of the net are some things we can improve on, we’ll be trying to be a little harder in this second round. I think even picking up on their guys coming out of their end, so that we can get behind them and nobody gets behind us has been our main focus.”

Puck drop from the Northern Lights Palace tonight is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., with the pregame show set for 7:10 p.m.

Game 2 will go Saturday night at the same time, and both can be heard on 105CJVR.
