The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) has been called in to investigate an in-custody death in Melfort.

Melfort RCMP were called to a report of a 44-year-old man disturbing the peace at a residence on Bemister Ave. W. on Tuesday morning at 9:45.

When police arrived, they found the man had broken the front window of the residence. He was taken into police custody and transported to the Melfort RCMP detachment.

EMS was contacted and took the man to hospital for assessment.

Shortly after, officers were called about a disturbance at the hospital involving the same man, and he was taken back to the detachment cells at about 10:45 a.m.

The man was found unresponsive at 5:10 p.m. by RCMP officers, and they started CPR and contacted EMS. He was taken to hospital, but was declared deceased.

The Police Act, 1990 mandates that Saskatchewan RCMP notify SIRT, who will investigate the circumstances of the in-custody death.

SIRT will have more information as the investigation develops.
