North Battleford lifts fire ban as conditions ease

May 12, 2025 | 10:46 AM

The City of North Battleford has lifted its complete fire ban Monday following a shift in the weather forecast and a reduced wildfire risk.

“Due to the forecast has changed pretty significantly and we’re expecting some rain today,” said Candace Toma, the city’s public and intergovernmental relations co-ordinator.

The ban had been in place since May 6 due to dry conditions and high winds. While rain was expected Monday, Toma said cooler temperatures and lighter winds also played a key role in the decision to lift the ban.

According to Environment Canada, there is a 60 per cent chance of showers today, with humidity at 71 per cent. Conditions are expected to remain stable throughout the week, with a mix of sun and cloud. Daytime highs are forecast to reach 20 C, with overnight lows dropping to around 4 C.

Toma said the city fire department relies on provincial tools and weather models when deciding whether to implement or lift a fire ban.

“The chief and the deputy chief do consult with the Fire Weather Index through the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency,” she said.

“So they’ll take a look at that and monitor that and then in conjunction with whatever the forecasted weather will be, they will either determine whether or not they’re going to issue a fire ban, remove a fire ban, that kind of thing.”

She added that while multiple factors are considered, the Fire Weather Index and forecasted conditions are “the most prevalent ones.”

Outdoor fires are now permitted in approved fire pits and the use of barbecues and smokers — which remained allowed throughout the ban — continues to be permitted.
