A 38-year-old man who was caught with a handgun and arrested in Prince Albert’s downtown area is now facing a number of charges.

On May 14, at approximately 2:20 p.m., police were called to the area of 12th Street West and 1st Ave. West for a weapons call.

Initial information stated that a man had a firearm in his waistband. Responding officers canvassed the area and located a male matching the suspect’s description near the corner of 10th Street East and 1st Avenue East.

Officers activated their vehicle emergency equipment and were able to stop the suspect. Upon searching the suspect’s person, he was found to be in possession of a handgun.

The suspect began to resist officers attempting to make the arrest, however, he was arrested a short time later.

According to a statement provided by the Prince Albert Police Service, as part of their gun crime strategy, they continue to investigate individuals with illegal firearms in the community.

“This aligns with the goal of prevention, intervention, and suppression of illegal activity in Prince Albert, which is outlined in the public safety priority of the Prince Albert Police Service 2024-2026 Strategic Plan.”

According to April’s monthly crime stats, there were 10 incidents that month related to weapons. This was in line with April 2024.
