P.A. fatal crash case proceeds to King’s Bench

May 27, 2025 | 4:20 PM

A Prince Albert court case involving the tragic passing of a senior after a crash in the city’s east hill area, is proceeding to Court of King’s Bench by way of consent committal.

In other words, that means both the Crown and defence agreed to it.

That was the outcome of last week’s preliminary inquiry hearing for Bernard McCallum, who in relation to the events that occurred on June 11, 2024, stands accused of dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence in the operation of a motor vehicle causing death.

McCallum has previously elected to be tried by judge alone. No dates have been set and the case will next be discussed at a pre-trial conference hearing on June 27.

On the day of the offence, 83-year-old Iris Prokopie was behind the wheel of a four-door sedan at the intersection of sixth Ave and 22 Street East.

While attempting to turn east onto 22nd Street, the vehicle was struck at a high rate of speed by a northbound truck.

About a week and a half later, Prokopie passed away in hospital.
