Riders officially announce signing of Ka’Deem Carey, two others

After several days of speculation and reports, the Saskatchewan Roughriders officially announced the signing of all-star running back Ka’Deem Carey.

Last week, the Toronto Argonauts announced they had released the former star running back who helped lead the club to the Grey Cup title in 2024.

The signing comes after the Riders starting running back A.J. Ouellette was injured in the first game of the season against Ottawa after suffering a head injury. No timeline has been announced by the club for when Ouellette could return.

Losing Ouellette will be a big loss for the Riders, but his possible replacement in Carey could help fill the big void.

Carey has been one of the CFL’s most consistent rushers over the last half-decade.

In 2024, Carey was third in the CFL with 1,060 yards on the ground rushing and scored seven touchdowns in over 18 games.

Through the air, Carey also recorded 37 receptions for 356 yards and one touchdown.

Outside of his time in Toronto, Carey spent four seasons with the Calgary Stampeders from 2019-2023. In Calgary, Carey led the entire CFL in rushing yards in both 2021 and 2022.

Carey is also a former draft pick of the Chicago Bears in 2014.

It’s not known if Carey will be in the Roughriders lineup for Saturday when they travel to Hamilton to take on the Tiger-Cats.

Riders also sign Hill, Washington

Carey won’t be the only new member of the Riders making an appearance at practice this week, so too will linebacker Braxton Hill and offensive lineman Darius Washington.

Hill spent from 2019 to 2023 playing for the University of Montana before being a member of the Riders expanded practice squad for four weeks last season.

In 2025, Hill attended training camp with the club. He has yet to make his CFL debut with the Green and White.

Washington, meanwhile, joins the Roughriders fresh off of rookie camp with the Denver Broncos.

Washington spent six seasons playing with Florida State University before being invited to the Broncos’ training camp.

In 2024, the six-foot-four, 310-pound offensive lineman started all 10 games for Florida State and is one of only two players in the school’s history to start in six consecutive seasons.

In 2023, Washington was named a First-Team All-ACC member and helped lead Florida State to be the leaders in offence, total touchdowns, yards per completion, fewest interceptions thrown and fewest turnovers.
