222’s Fastpitch Shootout in Melfort this weekend

The Spruce Haven ball diamonds will be full of action this weekend, as the Melfort Minor Softball Association (MMSA) hosts their annual 222’s Fastpitch Shootout.

The tournament will have the U13 and U15 Melfort Spirit as the hosts with 13 other teams competing, eight in the U15 side and five in the U13 side.

Five teams are coming from Saskatoon, two from Prince Albert, one from Regina, one from Kelvington, one from Humboldt, one from White Butte, and one from Manitoba.

“We are always excited to host this tournament, it’s our biggest fundraiser of the year, and it’s always really high-calibre softball, so we work really hard to make this tournament happen every year,” said MMSA President Jessie Spencer.

“This tournament typically makes us around $10,000 a year, and we use it to subsidize all kinds of skill camps, buy equipment and jerseys, and pay diamond fees, so it would be a really big loss if we weren’t able to do this tournament.”

The 222’s Fastpitch softball program always helps out with this specific tournament, as its founders/owners are originally from Melfort.

They do the draw planning, recruitment of the teams, and organization of the umpires for the event, with MMSA then being responsible for the rest, such as diamond preparation and maintenance, gate, canteen, and 50/50.

The tournament begins on Friday night at 6 p.m., with both Melfort Spirit teams kicking off the three-day event.

On Saturday, there will be action all the way from 8 a.m. until shortly after 9 p.m., with a skills competition taking place just after 1 p.m. The final game on Saturday will take place under the lights.

The skills competition will then include team baserunning, relay races from the outfield, a home run hitting contest, and an around-the-horn timed race.

On Sunday, the tournament will then wrap up with the playoffs, with the event ending following the conclusion of the 2:30 p.m. contest.
