Classic car to sell in Saskatoon auction with proceeds to STARS

In September of last year, Ed Haraldson from Outlook was able to find his dream car, a red and silver 1969 Dodge Dart, so he purchased it from Rod’s Hot Rods in Saskatoon.

Unfortunately, in January of this year, Haraldson then passed away at the age of 74 after a battle with cancer.

Haraldson wanted the car to mean something after his passing, so his wife, Patty, went to work on making that a reality. A few phone calls later, the car was set to be auctioned off during the inaugural Saskatoon Collector Car Auction on the June 20 and 21 weekend, being put on by EG Auctions.

“One of our consigners, Rod’s Hot Rods, had phoned us and said ‘I have a special story for you’,” said Todd Schwindt, President and CEO of EG Auctions. “Patty had contacted Rod and said they’d like to sell the car, but one of Ed’s dying wishes was that they sell the car and all the proceeds go to STARS Ambulance.”

Schwindt expects the car to generate a pretty large donation in the end.

While they’ve never had an auction like this in Saskatchewan before, EG Auctions has done plenty of auctions in Alberta and supported causes like the Sylvan Lake Gulls baseball team and their associated charities.

From what they’ve seen in Alberta, combined with the quality of the car and the story behind it, Schwindt expects to see some big numbers come auction time.

“The whole story itself is heartwarming. To tell you the truth, we’ve never really seen anything quite like this. The other thing that’s really cool is the car is a high-end car, this is not just some roller. This is a real high-end pro-touring Hemi dark car, so lots of value in this car. So we estimate the car to be worth between $150,000 and $200,000. I don’t know what it will sell for, it will sell for the highest bid, of course, but on behalf of the charity auction, we’re waiving all the buyer fees and seller fees.”

Viewing for the car show starts on June 20 at Prairieland Park in Saskatoon, and the auction of vehicles opens the next day, although early bids are welcome. Bidding on all vehicles in the Saskatoon Collector Car Auction opens on Monday, June 16, at 10:00 a.m.

“We do open for pre-bidding on Monday morning, so you can actually pre-bid the cars before the live auction, and you can do that and register to bid right on our website.

Once the online auction closes, the top bid will set the starting price for the live auction at the event.

Schwindt added that he expects the car to go through the auction at around 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.

Haraldson’s funeral was held in April, and according to his obituary, other donations in his honour can also be made to The Canadian Cancer Society, The Hanley Rosedale Fire Department, and The Outlook Rudy Fire Department.
