Predators clinch top spot in PGLL for second straight year, earn bye in playoffs

The Prince Albert Predators continue to show why they’re the reigning back-to-back provincial champions.

This past weekend while on the road, P.A. managed to secure the top spot in the Prairie Gold Lacrosse League (PGLL) for the second season in a row while also clinching a first round bye in the playoffs, heading straight to the finals.

Predators Head Coach Lucas Wells said the team was “pretty proud” of the accomplishment.

“I think it’s an important designation heading into playoffs. We like teams to know that they got to come to P.A. to play against us and have them be intimidated right away. It does give us that advantage in the Finals, game two will be at home again which is a huge thing for us.”

Prince Albert achieved first place in the PGLL following a dominant showing over Father’s Day weekend. They started off in Swift Current on Saturday where they narrowly toppled the Wolverines 16-12 before heading east to Moose Jaw, facing off with the second place Mustangs. There, P.A. played their best game of the season with a 19-3 rout of Moose Jaw. The pair of victories marked their eighth and ninth straight for the team as they improved to 9-0-1 (W-L-T) on the campaign with two games left in the regular season.

A big part to the Predators success this season has been from their young guns like goal scorer Chase Lehner and netminder Oliver Volek, but Wells said it’s more than just a couple guys doing the work.

“It’s just nice to have been able to see the growth of all these younger players – the first years then they become second years and fill in those gaps where needed.”

No matter the outcome for the Predators in the playoffs, the team will still be travelling to the MacDonald Cup in Abbotsford, B.C. later this summer to defend their Western Canadian Junior B championship.

Wells said that they are going to be the only out of province team at this year’s tournament, as the other seven clubs are from B.C.

“I’m looking forward to heading down there and hopefully making some waves within B.C. lacrosse. I know last year when we won MacDonald Cup, we had a couple of teams reach out to us and say it was a fake championship because there were no B.C. teams there. So, I think if we were able to go down there and have a good showing and possibly medal, it would be a big statement for Saskatchewan Lacrosse.”

Prince Albert will line up against the Saskatoon Swat for their final two regular season games with a home and home series. In their first matchup, the Preds will travel to the Bridge City for a meeting later tonight, before the Swat makes the trip to P.A. for a Canada Day matinee at Kinsmen Arena.
