Town of Lanigan discusses Jansen BHP project delay

A community that will likely see some benefit from BHP’s potash mine in Jansen is weighing in on a delay in the project.

Mayor Tony Mycock spoke about BHP’s decision in a news release outlining updates in the community.

“The recent BHP news about the Jansen mine being operational mid 2027 rather than 2026 and the BHP Stage 2 being deferred by 2 years to 2031 does not negatively impact Lanigan,” the mayor’s statement read.

Mycock said there are some benefits to Lanigan in having the project delayed.

“In fact, it helps us with some additional breathing space for development readiness,” Mycock explained. “Our growth strategies consider a much bigger picture than any one development in the region.”

According to Mycock, there are other significant projects that have been established or are underway. Nutrien Lanigan Potash has been around for over 60 years, and the Aspen Power Station is under construction.

“We have a strong local business and regional agricultural community and economy with significant local and regional agricultural industry,” Mycock said.

The mayor said council will continue to maintain their strategic plan put in place after the municipal election last fall.

“Investment confidence and interest in Lanigan is happening and is growing,” Mycock said. “We will continue to focus our efforts on investment retention and attraction, building on development readiness as we welcome new commercial and residential development in Lanigan.”

In the letter, Mycock said there are other exciting opportunities and expansions coming to fruition in the community, including the new waterpark facility, the local daycare expansion, and the new K to 12 school that is now open.

Housing starts have also climbed in the community, according to the mayor. There are about a dozen homes under construction in Lanigan so far this year, double the amount from last year. In the five years prior to that, there were few, if any, new houses built in the community.
