The Prince Albert Royals had a successful weekend at provincials in various communities across Saskatchewan this past weekend.

The 13U Royals competing at the Tier 7 championships in Gull Lake took home the gold, defeating the Sask Five Majors in the finals 13-3 in four innings.

The Royals dominated the tournament, winning all three of their round robin games by nine runs or more, outscoring their opponents 43-12 in pool play. They then went on to take down the Saskatoon Avalanche A’s 7-6 in the semifinals to advance to the gold medal game.

Meanwhile, the other 13U Prince Albert squad was in Edam for the Tier 1 Provincial Championships. There, the Royals did fare as well, winning one of their three round robin contests. They began with a 13-3 loss to the Assiniboia Aces on Friday, which was followed by a 14-7 loss on Saturday morning to the Lumsden Cubs.

However, it wasn’t all clouds as P.A. ended their tournament on a high note later that afternoon, defeating the Saskatoon Blue Jay Diamond Jaxx 9-6. Assiniboia went on to win the provincial title, toppling the host Edam Blue Sox in the finals 7-2.

The 18U Royals ended their run as the fifth best in the province down in Estevan.

The Royals won two of their three games in the round robin, defeating the host Estevan Brewers 7-6 in their tournament opener, and followed that up with an 11-4 loss to the Weyburn Beavers. Like the 13’s in Edam, Prince Albert ended pool play off strong and took down the Moose Jaw Canucks 11-7.

The Royals qualified for playoffs on Sunday and lined up with Weyburn once again with their backs against the wall. P.A. came out of the gate firing on all cylinders, scoring 10 runs in the first inning. Then, the Beavers began to chomp on the deficit, scoring one in the bottom of the first and adding another handful in the second to make it a 10-6 game heading into the third.

After the Royals scored three in the top half, Weyburn continued to rally but could only muster two runs as the score was now 13-8 at the midway mark. P.A. made it 14-8 in the top of the sixth before the Beavers exploded in the bottom half, scoring six in the frame to tie entering the seventh and final inning.

There, the Royals went three up, three down in top half before Weyburn managed to load bases in the bottom of seven, where a hit-by-pitch would send the winning run across home plate to send the Beavers to the semifinals with a 15-14 triumph.

Weyburn went on to defeat the Regina White Sox in the semis, before winning the provincial championship against the host Estevan, 5-2.
