PA police investigate death near homeless encampment

A large wooded area in Prince Albert’s West Hill area that is known to provide shelter for the city’s homeless, has been surrounded with yellow police tape and police are confirming they are investigating a death.

According to a statement released Thursday afternoon by the PA Police, at approximately 8:50 a.m. on July 31, officers were called to the 500 block of 39th Street West for a suspicious person.

Further information stated someone had potentially located a deceased person.

Officers quickly arrived on scene and located a deceased male. Members of the Prince Albert Police Service Forensic Identification Section (FIS), Prince Albert RCMP FIS and Saskatchewan Coroners Service were also called and attended the scene.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, Aug. 5.

The Major Crimes Unit is continuing to investigate and explained any further information will be provided when it becomes available or upon conclusion of the investigation.

The incident marks the third time this year a person has been dead at a homeless encampment. The other incidents occurred in the area across from Sask Polytech.
