Spectators swooning at performances by local ‘Grease’ talent

‘Grease’ is the word in Prince Albert.

Broadway North’s production of the musical is exceeding expectations both for the audience and the theatre company.

After a sold-out opening night Wednesday, and just a few seats left at last night’s performance, show director and band leader Mike Langlois said the rest of the run is already more than half booked.

“We had great crowds both nights and we’re very appreciative,” said Langlois. “I was hoping to fill the seats better than we have in the last few years and it’s exceeding expectations in ticket sales.”

While the popularity of Grease is a big selling point, Langlois said the production isn’t just “hopelessly devoted” to the music – it’s also showing love to the community. From weaving the Prince Albert Raider’s logo into the character’s gym outfits, to giving a shoutout to Ted Matheson Men’s Wear in the script and bringing in the Klassic Kruisers Kar Klub opening night, Langlois has made sure the production feels right at home. Local businesses have joined in too – including Mosaic Music, which donated an electric guitar that will be given away on closing night which is Friday, Aug. 22.

“Even the crowd is getting involved,” said Langlois. “We had some young girls dressed up as Pink Ladies to watch the show and even some senior Pink Ladies. It’s just great.”

The 55-member cast and crew features a live five-piece band, big laughs, enthusiastic dance numbers and some standout voices, including those of Sam Malenfant and Tazana Nilson who share a cheeky duet called Mooning.

“They are so cute and they’re singing great. I personally think it is one of the highlights of the show. I think it’s just hilarious and they’re getting big laughs and applause every night.”

Bryan Roces who plays the role of Doodie has a solo number early in the show. He said the atmosphere in the theatre has been electric so far.

“We have so many triple threats in this show. Lots of performers who act, sing and dance and just have so much talent to offer. It’s amazing to see all the talent Prince Albert has.”

Brenner Holash has mastered the 1950s greaser swagger and teen-boy showmanship of the main character Danny Zuko and he’s perfectly complemented by Elizabeth Chamberlain as Sandy whose heartfelt, yet powerful vocals bring the emotion of each lyric to life.

Dancer Avari Coleman commands the stage as flashy firecracker Cha-Cha DiGregorio. Perhaps the biggest cheer during Thursday night’s performance went to the dreamy, 1950s-style crooner who appeared in a sparkly white suit to sing Beauty School Dropout. The flashy, Elvis-like inspired role is filled by retired Prince Albert businessman and philanthropist Malcolm Jenkins – who is no stranger to the theatre scene.

“I loved seeing Malcolm get the crowd recognition he deserved with them hooting and hollering as soon as he came out, and he was just soaking up that attention, and it was awesome,” said Langlois.

The Malcolm Jenkins Family Foundation is donating $20 from each ticket sold during the run of Grease to the Victoria Hospital expansion.

The show continues with an evening performance tonight (Friday), a matinee tomorrow (Saturday) and shows next week running Tuesday to Friday night. Tickets can be purchased here.
