Ratt wins Sucker River byelection

Korrie Ratt is the winner of a Lac La Ronge Indian councillor byelection in Sucker River.

Ratt won with 69 votes, followed by 54 votes for Mary Veuillot and 30 for Larry McKenzie. The byelection was held Aug. 19 with a voter turnout of 49 per cent.

Ratt replaces Devin Bernatchez, who resigned to manage MP Buckley Belanger’s main constituency office in La Ronge.

“We haven’t had a leader since the end of May and when that evacuation happened, it was total chaos in Sucker River where we didn’t have anyone to run to,” Ratt explained.

“After seeing how everything happened, I just decided I was going to step up and help my community.”

Ratt has work experience in mining, policing, janitorial services and most recently as an electrician.

With a band election scheduled to be held in early 2026, Ratt will only be councillor for about half a year before he’s on the campaign trail again.

“We’ll see how it goes. This is the first time for me ever doing something like this,” he said.

“I am going to see what happens, what I can do, how I can help. I will probably run again come springtime. I know it is a short time, but I thought it was time for me to start trying to help my community too.”
