North Battleford Demo Derby packs a punch

Aug 27, 2025 | 12:19 PM

It was a day full of non-stop bashing and crashing as the Battlefords Agricultural Society held their 40th annual demolition derby on Saturday.

The event consisted of 26 full size-cars competing in three regular heats, as well as two mercy heats, an all-women’s powder puff heat, and a final. Along with the main event were a mini car heat and an 80s chain and bang heat.

The winner in the full-size category was Darren Poitras Sr., with Hunter Schrader and Joey Peters coming in second and third respectively. Russell Fauth won the mini derby, Brandon Kalyn won the chain and bang, and Zoie Sherstobetopp won the powder puff derby.

The derby had an estimated attendance of over 1,000. Ag Society Vice President and Derby Chairperson Blair Walker said it was great to see that so many community members came out to the event.

“The crowd and the attendance and the amount of people that showed up to support this event on its fourth or fifth year as a standalone. It was pretty amazing. And then the amount of cars that showed up this year was great.”

Derby Car Racer Vaugh Fauth said that seeing the full crowd while he was in the pits reminded him of watching demo derbies as a child.

“Growing up, in the summertime at the fair, it was the cool thing to go to. Now I have the opportunity to do it myself, I always thought it would be so much fun.”

Fauth says the derby in North Battleford is one of the last of the season, as he has only one more scheduled for September in Moosomin First Nation. As the summer winds down, the Ag Society is already looking towards fall events such as their Fall Garage Sale and Oktoberfest.
