Prince Albert businesses encouraged to weigh in on crime

Members of the Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce are being asked to be open and honest about the impact of local crime on their business.

Leading up to this month’s luncheon with police chief Patrick Nogier, a survey has been distributed to the members. CEO Patty Hughes told paNOW when she’s out and about in the community, she hears people hesitating to report crime.

“And that’s a little frustrating. One for us in the business community because you know our police aren’t dealing with the actual data and they don’t honestly know sometimes of everything that’s truly going on,'” she said.

Hughes explained the goal of the survey is to support the police and and make sure they know what is working and what is not. Citing the online reporting system available through the Prince Albert Police Service website, Hughes said they are asking business whether it’s too onerous and how it can be improved.

“Or you know what other systems maybe that we need to put in place and that could be beneficial and helpful for the business community to report what’s going on. As well it helps gather some data like is it vandalism, is it theft, is it cyber crime, is it fraud? You know what are the types of crime that some of our businesses are dealing with too,” Hughes said.

The chamber luncheon with the police chief will take place on Monday, Sept. 15 at the Days Inn and Hughes confirmed tickets have been selling fast. The eight-question survey itself will run until the 11th.

Among the questions posed are how concerned are you about crime affecting your business, are you aware of the online reporting system; and have you used the online reporting system.

Hughes was asked whether she’s personally aware of any businesses that have been hesitant about reporting crime.

“Some we have and it’s just because they feel like there may be lack of resources and nothing will be done and that needs to be improved and I definitely know that our police chief wants to make sure that is not a deterrent for them reporting,” she said.
