More details have been released about the plane crash near Cumberland House on Tuesday.

The Nipawin Fire Department was notified of the crash, but other agencies were on-scene before they could respond.

The Transportation Safety Board has responded with more information about the crash.

“The TSB has been notified that a privately registered float-equipped Piper PA22-150X was conducting a flight from Flin-Flon, MB to Moose Jaw, SK,” TSB Media Relations Coordinator Liam MacDonald told northeastNOW via email. “During the flight, the aircraft crashed in a forest approximately 16 nautical miles west of Cumberland House, SK.”

MacDonald said the Emergency Locator Transmitter (ELT) activated and transmitted an SOS through satellite tracking. The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre and RCMP teamed up to find the pilot, who was taken to the hospital once crews arrived.

MacDonald said the aircraft was “substantially damaged.”

The cause of the crash was not released.

Despite the crash, the TSB is not deploying investigators, and the crash has been classified as a Class 5 occurrence. Those types of incidents are not subject to comprehensive investigations; however, the data is recorded in suitable scope for “possible future safety analysis, statistical reporting, or archival purposes.”

Saskatchewan RCMP also updated northeastNOW on the crash.

The release said the RCMP were notified on Tuesday by the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Trenton, Ontario that an aircraft emergency beacon had been deployed near Cumberland House.

“Cumberland House RCMP responded immediately to the location approximately 20 kilometers west of the town, along Highway #123 and were joined by an officer with the Nipawin Detachment, Canadian Forces Search and Rescue, and Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) personnel from Cumberland House Fire Base who assisted with the search and rescue,” the release said. “An RCMP drone operator with the Cumberland House Detachment located the plane wreckage approximately one kilometer from the highway in a heavily wooded area.”

The lone occupant of the aircraft was taken to hospital, and RCMP described his injuries as non-life-threatening.
