Humboldt Fire Department recruitment session a success

The Humboldt Fire Department [HFD] got a chance to look at some potential recruits over the weekend.

They held a recruitment session on Saturday, and Fire Chief Mike Kwasnica told northeastNOW they were thrilled with the response.

“Better than we anticipated,” Kwasnica said. “We were hoping to get at least four to five [people] to come out. We did end up with six pre-registered, and four walk-ons.”

Kwasnica said many of the recruits were surprised at the commitment level and the physical capabilities that are required of volunteer firefighters. The day consisted of a one-hour presentation about what the fire department is, what the expectations are of a firefighter, some of the training requirements, and the commitment level needed for firefighters.

“In the afternoon we ran them through a physical endurance course, which involved everything from climbing up the aerial ladder to pulling hose to spraying water to doing a little bit of search-and-rescue,” Kwasnica said.

The physical training was offered as a taste of what a firefighter could face on the job.

Kwasnica said the department will now review the applicants that they had over the weekend. The HFD has two or three spots that need to be filled, and Kwasnica would like to add another trained person in queue.

The successful applicants will be invited to the next step, which is bringing them on as a member of the HFD.

“I just want to thank everyone that came out and tried out – it’s fantastic and we’re hoping that they continue to show interest in the fire department,” said Kwasnica.

He added they always have spots available with firefighters moving away or choosing to step away from the department, so it’s nice to have people step up and show interest.
