Broncos spoil party in Wolverines season opener

The Humboldt Broncos played the role of party pooper on Friday night in Warman, blanking the Warman Wolverines 3-0 in the very first regular season game for the fledgling SJHL team.

2024-25 Forward of the Year finalist Jacob Strizzi scored twice including an empty-net insurance marker and Teigan Semchyschen recorded a goal and an assist as the Broncos scored once in each period en route to the victory.

A sold out crowd packed the Warman Home Centre Communiplex in hopes of cheering their new team on to victory but the Broncos had other plans, muting any potential celebrations with a well-structured game and some timely scoring, backstopped by a 30-save shutout performance from goaltender Charlie Tritt.

in a game that featured no shortage of penalties it was the shorthanded units enjoying the upper hand. The Wolverines finished the night 0-for-9 on the man advantage, including a pair of 5-on-3 opportunities that fell by the wayside in the second period. The Broncos’ power play didn’t fare much better, with Strizzi’s empty netter standing as their only tally on eight chances.

With the buzz of the Wolverines’ first ever pre-game ceremony still lingering in the air, the Broncos jumped out to a 1-0 lead 4:55 in as Senchyshen deflected an Oakley McIlwain point shot past netminder Griffin Wright. That would be all the scoring in the first period as Humboldt outshot Warman 16-10 in the frame.

The Broncos ran into trouble with the law in the second, taking four consecutive penalties in the opening ten minutes and gifting the Wolverines with two separate two-man advantages, but the visitors escaped unscathed. While they, too, were unable to convert on their own subsequent power plays, Strizzi would eventually break through at even strength to extend the lead at 16:50.

The Wolverines redoubled their efforts in the third but a Karson Kerbes double minor for high-sticking with under four minutes to play put a major dent in their late comeback effort and Strizzi salted the game away at the 18:36 mark to complete the scoring. The Broncos outshot the Wolverines 40-30 on the night.

The teams will complete their home and home series on Saturday in Humboldt, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 at Elgar Petersen Arena. The game can be heard live on SaskNow.com.
