Fall begins with summer-like warmth, dry conditions

The calendar says fall begins on Monday, but the weather tells a different story.

Summer-like conditions will remain in effect across the province for much of the week.

Environment and Climate Change Meteorologist Matt Loney told northeastNOW that well-above normal temperatures will be the norm for the coming days.

“Skies are going to clear and we’re going to see temperatures essentially above normal for the next four to five days,” Loney said.

The mild temperatures will also be accompanied by dry conditions, with largely sunny conditions expected through the rest of the work week.

“It’s looking certainly dry and stable for the short term.”

Loney said the wind could be an issue today and tomorrow, with some gusts upward of 50 km/h. However, daytime high temperatures are expected to be about 10 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year over the next two or three days, and still warmer than average right through the rest of the week. Daytime highs this time of year are about 14 C.

There will be some clouds arriving toward the weekend, and though nighttime lows will be cool, Loney doesn’t anticipate frost until possibly late in the week. That makes for some solid conditions as this year’s harvest winds down.

“it’s going to be ideal weather for getting crops off,” Loney said.

He said it’s not uncommon for summer-like conditions to bleed into early fall, with high-pressure ridges maintaining control over large portions of the province. Loney said there is some guesswork as to whether the conditions will stick around longer-term, or if influences of an upper trough over the eastern Pacific will make its way into the Prairies.

Until that time, the largely warm, dry conditions are expected to remain in place.
