Mustangs seeking redemption on road trip to La Ronge

Sep 23, 2025 | 3:01 PM

The last time the Melfort Mustangs were below .500 was the morning of Friday, Nov. 11 of 2022, when they were set to begin a two-game road swing against the Estevan Bruins.

At the time, Melfort had a 7-8-4 record after losing at home to the Flin Flon Bombers on Wednesday, Nov. 2, by a score of 2-1.

The Mustangs would take both in Estevan, 6-2 and 6-1 on Nov. 11 and 12, respectively, pushing their record to 9-8-4 and never looking back since.

With two league championships in the past two seasons, the Stangs have never even sniffed a losing record, beginning the 2023/24 campaign 9-1 and the 2024/25 year 10-2.

Unfortunately, that long streak of a .500 or above winning percentage for the Blue and Green, which totalled 1,043 days, ended this past Friday in their home opener against the Nipawin Hawks.

Melfort fell 4-3 at the hands of their most hated rival in their lone contest of the opening weekend, but thankfully, the Mustangs didn’t have to sit on it too long, as an early-week match against the Ice Wolves provides an opportunity to get back on track.

The Stangs have fared quite well against La Ronge in recent history, going 7-1 in eight meetings last season and 9-2-2-1 in the last five years at the Mel Hegland Uniplex.

The difference in the 2025/26 campaign, however, is that the Ice Wolves have a new home.

La Ronge is now playing at the Jonas Roberts Memorial Community Centre (JRMCC), which is located in Lac La Ronge, just south of Air Ronge.

The Blue and Green have made prior visits to the JRMCC, having to do so in a first-round playoff matchup in 2023, due to ice issues at the Mel.

The Mustangs lost Game 3 in overtime, 4-3, before taking Game 4, 3-1 at the JRMCC.

Flash forward to this year, and both teams are looking for their first wins of the season, as the Ice Wolves lost a pair to the Flin Flon Bombers over the weekend by a combined score of 14-5.

Two hungry divisional foes battling it out in hopes of securing a victory… puck drop between Melfort and La Ronge goes at 7:30 p.m., with the pregame show beginning at 7:15 p.m. on 105CJVR and CJVR.com
