Palmarin plays hero as Wolverines earn first ever win

The Warman Wolverines are officially in the win column for the first time and fittingly, their captain led the charge. Vinny Palmarin’s goal 1:22 into overtime ended a back-and-forth affair with the Kindersley Klippers on Friday night in Kindersley, lifting the Wolverines to a 6-5 win and making franchise history in the process. The team had lost its first three games of the season.

Palmarin’s overtime heroics came after a favourable bounce created by the Wolverines’ youngest player. Saskatoon Blades prospect Mason Moreland, on the eve of his 16th birthday, carried the puck into the Kindersley zone and fired a shot that caromed off a Klippers defender and right to the captain, who ripped a wrist shot past Brett O’Halloran, touching off the victory celebration.

“It feels so great. I feel like with the new franchise, we’ve had a lot of pressure on us to get some wins but we finally did it tonight and it’s great for the boys,” Palmarin said.

In a game that featured five lead changes, the Wolverines had the last laugh, but it was the Klippers who opened the scoring with a power play goal by Jaxon Herchak less than three minutes into the contest. From there, the teams took turns scoring back-to-back goals all the way through to Palmarin’s winner.

Warman leveled the score on a rush at the 13:24 mark when Riley Rich-Holden fed a trailing Karson Kerbes, who beat O’Halloran for his first career SJHL goal. The play began with a big hit by Pherson Loehndorf in the Wolverines zone to force a turnover and send the puck the other way.

The visitors took their first lead just over a minute later while killing a penalty as Brodie Scopick stole the puck in the Klippers zone and beat O’Halloran for his first SJHL marker and the first shorthanded goal in team history. The Wolverines led 2-1 after one period.

It didn’t take long for the Klippers to respond. Ethan Sautner tallied just 41 seconds into the second, then Brock Evans put Kindersley in front 3-2 at the 7:59 mark. Before the period was done, however, the Wolverines answered back as Ethan Dundas netted his second goal in as many games off a goalmouth scramble with less than two minutes left.

The see-saw battle continued in the third as Loehndorf brought the puck out of the corner and squeezed a shot past O’Halloran to give Warman a 4-3 lead. But the veteran defenceman then found himself the victim of a bad bounce just over two minutes later, when he inadvertenly redirected a cross-ice pass from Kindersley’s Cooper Flath into the Wolverines net. Then, at 7:17, Mason Eggen bulged the twine to put the Klippers ahead 5-4.

But once again Warman had a response, as Wylie Smith fired a shot through O’Halloran’s legs at 14:57, knotting the score at five and setting the stage for Palmarin to play the overtime hero.

The Wolverines outshot the Klippers 32-26 overall. Newly acquired goaltender Taye Timmerman earned the win in his first start with the team after being reassigned to Warman by the WHL’s Saskatoon Blades on Thursday, while Brett O’Halloran took the loss for Kindersley.

The celebration won’t last long as the Wolverines turn their focus to Saturday’s rematch with the Klippers in Warman.

“It’s a building block each and every day to get better. It’s a great win tonight but we’re right back at it tomorrow so you can’t be too high, can’t be too excited,” head coach and general manager Brett Pilkington said. “We gotta enjoy that the zero’s gone in the win column but we gotta be ready to go tomorrow night.”

Saturday’s game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Warman Home Centre Communiplex. Fans can catch all the action live on SaskNow.com.
