Elevate your wellness routine with Boreal Sauna Company

It’s the ultimate luxury of relaxation – a private, mobile, wood-fired sauna can transform any setting into a wellness sanctuary.

Boreal Sauna Company is a new business offering that experience in the heart of Northern Saskatchewan. Payton Hall and his wife McKenna started the Prince Albert based company with the goal of providing a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, allowing you to rejuvenate your mind and body.

“We were full-time residents up in Elk Ridge for about three and a half years and there was something missing in that area for outdoor events or experiences that were budget-friendly and laid back,” said McKenna. “So, that’s what motivated us to start it, and since then we’ve been renting out our two mobile barrel saunas to people all over Northern Saskatchewan.”

The mobile saunas sit atop a trailer and can be delivered or picked up by those who can tow with their own vehicles. The saunas are small enough to sit on driveways or tucked into a backyard for more privacy. Many people in lake country choose to place them on the beach, near the water. Boreal Saunas has also been approved by the City of Prince Albert to set up in Little Red Park on a semi-regular basis and are looking forward to hosting public sessions there.

The saunas come with enough firewood to last the duration of the rental and a cold plunge bath to heighten the experience.

“There’s tons of studies out there that relate to all-cause mortality and how consistent sauna use reduces that across broad populations. We try not to be snake oil salesmen and tell people that if they rent from us for a weekend, they’re going to be magically healthy, but I can personally say as someone who has been using them regularly, the biggest thing I noticed is a major reduction in stress, less muscle soreness, and improved sleep” said Payton.

Some Finnish studies showed men who used saunas two to three times per week, and especially four to seven times per week, had a significantly lower risk of dying from any cause, with the latter group showing the most substantial reduction. The benefit is linked to improved cardiovascular health, including reduced arterial stiffness and blood pressure.

Besides the health benefits, McKenna said the trend of mobile and outdoor saunas is increasing as people look for unique ways to relax and enjoy nature with their friends and family.

“Many people that are thinking about purchasing a sauna for their cabin rent from us to see how they like it before making the financial commitment to buy their own” she said.

The set up is simple, and so is the operation of the saunas.

“We’ll arrange a time that works well for everyone to drop off the sauna, run them through the safety information and how to use it, and then we turn them loose for our clients to do what they want. If they want to have it running all day, for the whole weekend, that’s their choice. If they want to just use it in the morning and the evening, it’s totally up to them,” she said.

Boreal Saunas can comfortably fit six people at once, but Payton jokes that some experienced customers recently set the record straight for them.

“Technically, they can fit eight. We had a group of guys who rented that were from Finland and when we told them it was a six-person sauna, they laughed at us and said no way…that’s for eight people. You just gotta get cozier,” Payton laughed.

Their current price for both the weekend (Friday to Sunday) and weekday (Monday to Thursday) special is $400 plus tax. They also offer long-term rentals for people looking to have a sauna at their place for an extended period of time; this includes partnerships with other local businesses. Payton and McKenna said they strive to keep their prices fair and affordable while still abiding by all business licensing guidelines in the communities they serve.

“We hold ourselves to a very high standard as far as conducting business in the safest and most professional way possible. We carry extensive liability and property insurance that protects everyone involved – it’s not cheap, but it’s important to us that we look after those details. Proper licenses and ethically navigating the ongoing fire bans during the summer are considerations we account for before committing to any rental request. We want to be known as a company that does things the right way while still offering a high quality service for a reasonable price.”

As a Métis entrepreneur, McKenna plans to embrace some of the Métis and Indigenous business development programs that are offered in the province in the hopes that this is just the beginning of what Boreal Saunas has to offer. While they both have careers in education outside of the sauna business, they plan to continue to grow and bring new rentals and experiences to the area.
