What a mesh: elk rescued from entangled web at Prince Albert National Park
One bull elk was freed from an unwanted entanglement yesterday by Parks Canada staff in Prince Albert National Park.
Park officers learned about the elk, who has a mat of plastic netting wrapped around his antlers.
Conservation officers were able to immobilize the animal and remove the matting, after which the elk recovered quickly and walked away.
Male elk like to mark their territory during the annual rut and assert dominance by rubbing their antlers on trees and other objects. They also scrape the ground, which can lead to tangles such as this animal.
