The hot start for the Prince Albert Raiders continued Wednesday after the Raiders picked up a big 6-0 win over Vancouver, but Friday’s matchup with the Kamloops Blazers offers a different challenge. With the league’s leading scorer JP Hurlbert, it will be up to the Raiders defence to shut down the Blazers offence as Kamloops opens their trip through the East Division.

The Raiders have won four straight games and sit at the top of the WHL standings with a record of 5-0-1 (Wins-Losses-Overtime Losses), and other than the overtime loss to Saskatoon in game two of the season, the Raiders have scored at least four goals in every game this season. The Raiders have just one day of rest coming into Friday’s game.

As for the Blazers, they are on a full six days rest as they start their six game road trip through Saskatchewan and Manitoba. The Blazers are 3-2-0 to start the season, but they lost their last two games to Seattle on the road 7-4, and at home to Portland 6-4.

Starting with special teams, the Raiders powerplay went 3/6 on Wednesday to improve to an even 36% success rate and the third best powerplay in the league. On the penalty kill, the Raiders have killed their last 10 straight penalties off successfully, sitting at 81.8% for the sixth ranked penalty kill in the league.

As for the Blazers, their powerplay has been decent with a 28% success rate, good for eighth in the league. On the penalty kill, the Blazers are the least penalized team in the league right now with only 15 kills, but when they’ve been needed they’ve been good as they sit right behind the Raiders at seventh in the league and an even 80%.

Daxon Rudolph has taken over the leading scorer position for the Raiders with 2G-6A-8P on the season, but from there the scoring race clogs up. Three players are tied for second in team scoring, Brayden Dube has 4G-3A-7P, Aiden Oiring has 3G-4A-7P, and Riley Boychuk is yet to score a goal but has an assist in every game for 0G-7A-7P.

Boychuk’s point streak is the longest going for the Raiders right now with 0G-7A in the first six games of the season. Rudolph has a four game streak going with 1G-6A in that time, and Ben Harvey has put together a four game point streak as well with 3G-1A. Finally Jonah Sivertson has points in his last two games with 2G-1A, and Brock Cripps has 0G-2A in his last two.

As for the Blazers, 17-year-old American rookie JP Hurlbert leads the team and the league with 9G-5A-14P. Behind him is Jordan Keller with 4G-4A-8P, and Ryan Michael tied for second in team scoring with 0G-8A-8P.

Hurlbert has had at least one goal in every game played so far for a five game point streak with his 9G-5A. In the last four games, Nathan Behm has 4G-3A. In the last three games, Ryan Michael has 0G-6A in that time, Jordan Keller has 4G-1A, and Tommy Lafreniere has 2G-1A.

Finally on to goaltending, it’s likely Dimitri Fortin’s turn to start for the Raiders who has a 0.902 save percentage and a record of 1-0-1 this season. Michal Orsulak earned his first shutout of the season on Wednesday with 14 saves, he now sits with a 0.920 save percentage and a perfect 3-0-0 record.

For the Blazers, they’re split time between their two goaltenders as well. Logan Edmontstone has a 2-1-0 record with a 0.907 save percentage, while rookie Ivans Kufterins has an 0.889 save percentage and a 1-1-0 record.

The Raiders and the Blazers will do battle at 7:00 p.m. at the Art Hauser Centre, and it’s Justice Christensen ‘Juice Bomb’ bobblehead night. You can listen in to the pregame show on 900 CKBI starting at 6:30 p.m.
