Wolverines skid continues with loss to Ice Wolves

The Warman Wolverines delivered the first blow but the La Ronge Ice Wolves threw the knockout punch as they picked up a 5-2 win on home ice Tuesday night, handing the Wolverines their fifth consecutive loss.

The SJHL’s lowest-ranked power play entering the night tallied twice in the victory and five different players found the back of the net, while Kayden Yeaman and Neka Jean replied for Warman.

The game began on a positive note for the visitors with Yeaman netting his first career SJHL goal just over three minutes in, marking just the second time this season that the Wolverines have opened the scoring. The speedy forward took advantage of a fallen Ice Wolves defenceman, skating down the open left wing and firing the puck past La Ronge goaltender Graham Brown to give Warman the early lead.

The advantage lasted less than four minutes. On the Ice Wolves’ first power play of the game, Trevor Oishi drifted from the boards into the slot and beat Griffin Wright for his third goal in as many games since being acquired from the Weyburn Red Wings on October 7.

The Wolverines faced some more adversity late in the period when Ethan Dundas was assessed a five-minute major penalty for charging and a game misconduct, but they successfully killed it off. However, midway through the second the Ice Wolves struck again with Owen Turner scoring to make it 2-1. Late in the frame, La Ronge captain Zane Normand buried another power play goal to put the home side ahead by two heading to the second intermission. The Ice Wolves had scored just twice with the man advantage in their first ten games before matching that output in Tuesday’s contest.

Warman got new life 40 seconds into the third when Jean caught a break as he took a pass in front of the net only to have it slide off the toe of his stick yet still elude Brown for his second goal of the season. But Mattias De Zen restored the two-goal lead for La Ronge at the 7:51 mark, depositing a rebound chance.

Wright went to the bench for an extra skater with just over two minutes to play but the Wolverines could not capitalize and Evan Cook rounded out the scoring into the empty net with less than a second to play.

The Ice Wolves outshot the Wolverines 48-38 on the night. La Ronge went 2-for-5 on the power play while Warman failed to score on three opportunities with the man advantage.

The Wolverines now sit at 1-7-1 on the season with their next four games coming on home ice. They’ll kick off that stretch with a pair of contests against the Nutrien Division rival Battlefords North Stars on October 17 and 18.
