Long-time Rotarian honoured in naming of new N. Battleford splash park

North Battleford city council has approved the Rotary Club of the Battlefords’ request to name the city’s new splash park after longtime community volunteer Vic Pearsall.

The decision follows a formal submission from the Rotary Club outlining Pearsall’s decades of service and sponsorship toward the project, which was built through a partnership between the club, Access Communications and the Living Sky School Division.

In its letter to council, the club noted Pearsall — who passed away in 2011 — left a substantial endowment to continue Rotary’s community work.

“In recognition of his sponsorship and personal achievements, which include holding the Saskatchewan Order of Merit, recognition from the Western Canadian Aviation Museum Hall of Fame, the Saskatchewan Aviation Hall of Fame, the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal, Luseland Pioneer of the Year, and the Canadian Owners’ and Pilots’ Association Award of Merit,” the club wrote.

In an administrative report presented Oct. 14, Director of Parks and Recreation Cheryl DeNeire said a memorandum of understanding signed in April 2025 between the city and Rotary Club included a commitment for Rotary to propose a name for the new spray park once construction was complete.

The $200,000 project, funded through a donation from the Rotary Club of the Battlefords, is located in the Connaught Elementary School yard. According to the report, the sign will be installed ahead of a grand opening planned for spring 2026.

The Rotary Club will provide the park sign, with installation costs covered under the overall project budget.

Mayor Kelli Hawtin said the partnership has brought much-needed recreation to that part of the city.

“We’re very grateful to the Rotary for their contribution to recreation, and that’s an area of the city that was really underserved with free recreational amenities,” she said.

The new facility, officially to be known as the Vic Pearsall Splash Park, is part of North Battleford’s 2025 capital projects and supports the city’s long-term goals of fostering community well-being and regional recreation partnerships.
