The Battlefords North Stars made the most of their penalty kill with three shorthanded goals in the second period on their way to an 8-2 victory over the Warman Wolverines on Friday night at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

The Wolverines came into their longest homestand of the early season on the heels of a 5-2 loss to the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Tuesday. Warman and Battlefords had previously met in the Wolverines’ third game in franchise history on September 23, when the North Stars came away with a 5-2 victory.

Battlefords started the scoring in the opening period of play when Carter Geysen put in his second goal of the season. Josh Knittig fired in his third and Cole Hines scored his first goal in the SJHL to make it 3-0 North Stars after one period of play.

Warman took away the shutout bid from Kaeden Serpa in the second period when Pherson Loehndorf found the back of the net for his second goal of the season, putting the Wolverines on the scoresheet at 3-1.

The North Stars then went on a short handed scoring spree, netting three goals, with Kaleb Dewar tallying twice and Finlay Klippenstein collecting his first career SJHL goal, extending the Battlefords lead to 6-1 after two periods of play.

In the third period, Drew Williamson put home his first career SJHL goal at the 4:58 mark, making it a 7-1 lead. Newcomer Carter Bergen arrived in Warman in style, scoring in his first game with the Wolverines to close the gap to 7-2. Williamson then sealed the victory with his second of the game, putting the North Stars back into the win column.

Wolverines starting goaltender Taye Timmerman stopped 18 shots before being replaced by Griffin Wright, who denied nine of the 12 shots he faced. On the North Stars end, Serpa backstopped the Battlefords to victory, keeping 38 of 40 shots out of the net.

The Wolverines, who are on a six-game losing streak, currently sit fourth in the Nutrien Division and 12th in the overall SJHL standings at 1-8-1, while the North Stars are third in the Nutrien at 4-3-1. The Wolverines will look for revenge on the North Stars on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., once again on home ice.
