Oliver Nottingham netted the game winner in a shootout, propelling the Warman Wolverines to their first ever home victory in franchise history with a 4-3 win over the Battleford North Stars.

The Wolverines came into the second game of the weekend home series following an 8-2 loss at the hands of the North Stars on Friday night. Warman was aiming to break a six-game losing skid which had stuck around since September 27.

Karson Kerbes opened the scoring in the first period to give Warman a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes of play. Battlefords knotted the score in the second period courtesy of Kobe Sawyer, only for Kane Kennedy to fire one home in the third period to put Warman ahead 2-1. Josh Knittig tied the scoreboard again at the 10:09 mark for the North Stars, who then went on to grab their first lead of the game thanks to Sebastian Miles, making it 3-2.

The Wolverines wouldn’t back down though, and Riley Rich-Holden scored in the final minute of regulation to send the game to overtime. With neither team able to capitalize during the five-minute three-on-three session, the teams went to a shooutout, where Nottingham made no mistake in the third round, sending the fans home happy and giving the Wolverines their historic first win at home in franchise history.

Although he played the hero in the shootout, Nottingham was more thrilled about being a part of the team through his first two games since joining the Wolverines. “I was just excited for the boys,” he said. “I got here this week, so I haven’t been here for the whole ride, but I’m glad to be a part of it now and I’m glad to help the boys win.”

Wolverines head coach and general manager Brett Pilkington described the victory as a great moment for the team to finally get their first home victory out of the way.

“It’s a great feeling, not only for the franchise, but the players and our staff. We’ve been working hard since day one here, and you know, felt we should have been rewarded a few times, and just hasn’t happened. To see us come through in the shootout tonight was a great feeling,” he said.

The Wolverines currently sit in fourth in the Nutrien Division with a 2-8-1 record while the North Stars are standing in third in the Nutrien Division at 4-3-2. The Wolverines continue their four-game homestand next weekend with a showdown against the Melville Millionaires on October 24. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard on SaskNoW.com.
