RCMP use dog service, tire deflation to nab suspect near Leask

Officers from the Ahtahkakoop RCMP detachment relied on a tire deflation device and a service dog to catch a man suspected of assault, theft and robbery.

A stolen camper was spotted on Mistawasis Nêhiyawak (Mistawasis First Nation and reported as suspicious to police on Oct. 15 at around 11 a.m.

When officers approached the camper, a vehicle that was parked nearby began driving erratically with the driver attempting to evade a traffic stop, colliding with the police vehicle at one point.

After confirming the camper was stolen, officers found three rifles, a sawed-off shotgun and ammunition inside of it.

They continued trying to stop the driver of the vehicle, using the deflation device.

Another report of a robbery in the RM of Leask came in and the members then determined that the people in the vehicle who had fled from them had assaulted a man and stole his truck. The victim reported non-life-threatening injuries.

The tire deflation device was deployed again, which the stolen truck drove over and then continued into a nearby field.

The driver and a passenger tried to run on foot but were tracked down by the RCMP Police Dog Services and arrested.

Eldon Johnstone, age 28 from Leask is charged with theft, having stolen property, fleeing police, assault police, resisting arrest, robbery and multiple gun violations.

A 25-year-old female from Blaine Lake has been charged in relation to this investigation. As her Information has not yet been sworn, we are unable to identify her.

Eldon Johnstone appeared in Prince Albert Provincial Court on October 17, 2025 Ahtahkakoop RCMP continue to investigate.
