Big night for Rich-Holden leads Wolverines to sweet Hallo-win

Riley Rich-Holden enjoyed a scary good performance as he scored two goals, helping the Warman Wolverines snap a two game losing skid with a 5-2 victory over the defending Canterra Seeds Cup champion Melfort Mustangs on Halloween night.

Hudson Kerr started the scoring for the Wolverines at the 9:12 mark for the only goal of the first period. It was assisted by Carter Bergen and Warman native Kanyan Unger, who recorded his first point in his first career SJHL game for his hometown team.

The Mustangs got even in the second when Rhett Vedress fired home his second goal of the campaign. That only led to Riley-Rich Holden finding the back of the net to put the Wolverines back up 2-1 through two periods of play.

Bergen started the third period with a bang, ripping his fourth goal in the SJHL and third as a member of the Wolverines to increase the lead to 3-1 with Unger registering another assist. Danton Cox scored his second goal of the season to shorten the Wolverines lead to one goal, but that is as close as the Mustangs would get. Oliver Nottingham and Rich-Holden put the game away in the dying minutes of regulation time with a pair of empty-net goals to give the Wolverines their third victory at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

Wolverines head coach and general manager Brett Pilkington saw a lot of good things from his team en route to the victory. “We’re trying to, like we talked about before the game, put some games together here with consistency. And I thought we did a lot of good things tonight, and because of that, we got rewarded with the two points,” he said.

Rich-Holden was glad that the team was able to pull through with a regulation win after the tough results of the last couple games.

“It felt great. Obviously, the weekend before, we had a big win against Melville and then a tough one against Yorkton, and then Kindersley fought hard. So it was nice to get an actual win in regulation.”

Friday also saw Wolverines defenceman Pherson Loehndorf suit up for his first game since learning that he and goaltender Taye Timmerman were both selected to represent Team SJHL at the 2025 Western All Star Showcase from November 4 – 6.

The Wolverines occupy fourth spot in the Nutrien Division with a record of 4-9-2 and currently sit in the while the Mustangs have lost back-to-back games to drop to 6-5-2, good for third in the UPL Division. The Wolverines will hit the road for Melfort on Saturday for the back end of the home and home series, with game time set for 7:30 p.m. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard for free on SaskNow.com.
