Strong start helps Mustangs outlast Wolverines

The Melfort Mustangs made the most of the first period with a pair of goals and never looked back, defeating the Warman Wolverines 5-3 to earn a split of their home-and-home weekend series at the Northern Lights Palace Arena in Melfort, The Wolverines won Friday’s contest in Warman by a 5-2 count, with Riley Rich-Holden scoring twice.

Tristen Ziola started the scoring 4:24 into the game when he put in his second goal of the season, then Kaleb Binner found himself his first of the season to put Melfort up 2-0 through one period of play.

The Mustangs picked up right where they left off to begin the second period when Owen Nelson racked up his thrd goal of the season and Ziola fired home his second of the game to widen the Mustangs lead to 4-0.

The Wolverines began to claw into the Mustangs lead when Brodie Scopick scored his second goal of the year and Bexson Fox found the back of the net for the first time this season to cut the deficit in half by the end of the frame. But Cooper Atkinson got the Mustangs back up by three when he collected his second goal of the season in the third period.

Cam Sarna fired one past Kason Kobelka for his fourth SJHL goal as Warman tried to muster a comeback, but it was not enough as Melfort held on to split the home and home series.

Kobelka earned his fifth victory of the season, denying 16 of 19 shots faced and Griffin Wright blocked six of ten shots before being replaced in the second period by Eric Kahl, who made 14 saves on 15 shots. The Wolverines, who begin November with a record of 0-1, currently take up fourth spot in the Nutrien Division at 4-10-2 while the Mustangs sit third in the UPL Division at 7-5-2.

The Wolverines will next go to battle with the Kindersley Klippers for the fourth time this season on Friday in Warman to kick off another home and home set. Every Wolverines home and away game can be heard for free on SaskNow.com.
