Racquetball champion hoping to grow sport in Prince Albert

A Prince Albert woman is hoping to cause a ‘racquet’ in the city through her favourite sport.

Terra Cowan is a World Champion in racquetball and sits on the board of the Saskatchewan Racquetball Association.

She said she’s frustrated at how little access there is for youth in Prince Albert to give the sport a try, adding there’s only one racquetball court in the entire city.

“Racquetball is an amazing sport, and it doesn’t get the attention that it deserves. The challenge in PA is that we only have one racquetball court at Fitness for 10, and you have to be 12 years of age to play there.”

To combat this problem, Cowan took it upon herself to create her own racquetball program, complete with inflatable courts that can be used in school gyms. She also provides all of the equipment necessary, other than shoes and clothing.

The affordable program will be for youth aged 12 and under, where Cowan, who’s also a certified coach, will teach the basics of the sport with a focus on fun. Things she wants to try include using a radar gun to test how hard they can hit the ball and using targets to practice their aim.

Cowan said the limited access to the sport in the city is one of the major roadblocks to why kids aren’t playing it anymore.

“Kids pick their passion at a young age. Racquetball at a recreational level is awesome, like it’s great exercise and it’s lots of fun, [but] my goal is to make racquetball a household name like volleyball and soccer is and those kinds of sports that are introduced in the schools. All kids know and play them.”

She added that she already has a booking for the program at the end of the month and even hopes that it could be taught as part of gym classes in schools.

“I can implement it as part of the Phys. ed program, too, if the schools are interested.”
