Local partnership provides indoor training facility for baseball

Local youth who enjoy playing baseball will have a new place to train during the offseason.

BGC Battlefords has offered Battlefords Minor Baseball Inc (BMBI) the opportunity to use their facility as an indoor space for training and hosting clinics and camps.

Last fall, BGC Battlefords was gifted a 500-square-foot building to offer more space for their own programs. After discussing a partnership with many local organizations, BGC decided the minor baseball group was the best fit to share the facility.

Executive Director of BGC Battlefords, Nicole Combres said helping the youth in the community is a core value for the organization.

“This partnership with BMBI allows us to continue to support the children, youth and families in the Battlefords, just through a different avenue, and this time it’s baseball,” said Combres.

Vice President of Battlefords Minor Baseball, Dean Dimmick said the organization has not had an indoor facility for the past two years

“Our lease came due in 2023 and really, we’ve been looking for something for the last couple of years and when the opportunity presented itself, it was just a match made in heaven,” said Dimmick.

Many big renovations are currently being done to the facility; plywood and puck board are being added to the walls, the concrete is being levelled and rubber flooring will be placed throughout the building. Dimmick said renovations are close to being completed, and the facility should be open in the next couple of months.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize how long this has been in the planning stage. Aside from looking for a facility, we’ve been in discussions and working with the Boys and Girls Club for over a year now on this,” he said.

BMBI also received their first sponsorship to help with the cost of renovations from Rongve Wealth Management Group of RBC Dominion Securities.

Wealth Management Group associate David Schell said supporting youth sports is important because children are the future of the Battlefords communities.

“I think just more children or more youth getting involved in baseball is a very good thing. We think if they’re playing sports, they’re not typically getting into as much trouble,” said Schell.

The new facility will be primarily used by the minor baseball teams but will be open to all baseball and softball players in the area when time is available.
