Wolverines offence hits franchise high in win over Red Wings

The Warman Wolverines set a new franchise record for goals in a game as they defeated the Weyburn Red Wings 7-3 to earn a split of their weekend series in Weyburn.

Seven different Wolverines lit the lamp and 14 players recorded at least one point in what may have been the team’s most complete effort of the season. It also took some resilience as Warman trailed 2-0 after one period before taking control of the game in the final 40 minutes.

The seeds of the victory came one night earlier when the Wolverines scored three times in the third period of a 5-4 loss to the Wings.

“Any time you can get the sticks hot it helps for sure and it started last night in the third period. You kind of get a feel for it,” head coach and general manager Brett Pilkington said. “I wish it started a little earlier there ’cause yesterday in the second period we had a few power play chances that we didn’t convert and if they go in maybe we’re talking about getting four points this weekend but when the sticks get hot you’ve got to capitalize on it and that’s what we did tonight.”

After Luke Dekay and Lucas Schmid staked Weyburn to a two-goal lead, Warman’s offence began to click five minutes into the second. Following a lengthy shift in the offensive zone, Pherson Loehndorf beat goaltender Preston Patenaude from the top of the left circle, then 43 seconds later former Red Wing Carter Bergen got behind the defence and buried his fourth goal as a Wolverine to level the score at two.

“I could tell everybody was bought in tonight. The attitude and energy was a lot different. After the first, I still knew we had a good chance to win,” Loehndorf said.

Later in the frame, a turnover at the Warman blue line led to a partial break for Kane Kennedy, and Friday’s hat trick scorer stayed hot with a laser from the right circle for his team-leading 10th goal of the season. The Wolverines, who had scored just nine second-period goals in their first 19 games, tallied three in the frame to take a 3-2 lead into the intermission.

After ceding the game’s first four power plays to the Wings, the Wolverines finally got their first man advantage early in the third and cashed in as Vincent Palmarin blasted a one-timer past Patenaude for his second goal of the campaign. Trennen Redlick answered back for Weyburn a short time later but just 1:14 after that, Owen Parks restored the two-goal cushion with his third of the season.

Just over two minutes later, Corban Almen notched his first career SJHL goal to push the lead to 6-3. The Red Wings pulled Patenaude for an extra attacker with more than four minutes remaining but could not control the ensuing offensive zone faceoff and Ethan Dundas hit the empty net to complete the scoring.

Weyburn held a 39-34 edge in shots and scored twice on four power plays, while Warman finished the night 1-for-3 on the man advantage. Griffin Wright made 36 saves to pick up his second win of the season while Patenaude was saddled with the loss as the Wings fell to 12-4-2 on the year.

The Wolverines, who improved to 5-13-2, will now look to build on the victory as they prepare to welcome the Flin Flon Bombers to Warman for a pair of midweek games.

“We had two games with them up in Flin Flon that were great for us as well and we were only able to get a point, so same idea when they’re coming into our rink. We want to play for those four points and we want to play with that consistency of 60 minutes every night,” Pilkington said.

The Wolverines and Bombers open their two-game set on Tuesday at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. and fans can hear the broadcast on SaskNow.com.
