Bombers bounce back to earn split with Wolverines

A relentless attack proved too much to handle for the Warman Wolverines as they fell 3-1 to the Flin Flon Bombers on Wednesday in the back end of a two-game set at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex.

The Wolverines entered play seeking a season-best third straight victory but the Bombers took control early and never looked back as they rebounded from a 5-2 loss the previous night to claim the final meeting of the season between the two teams, making a winner of rookie goaltender Finn Werner in his SJHL debut.

Just as they did on Tuesday, Flin Flon opened the scoring with Landon Alexander netting his fifth goal of the season less than six minutes into the contest. The Bombers outshot the Wolverines 15-4 in the opening period as they took a 1-0 lead into the intermission.

The visitors doubled their advantage just 39 seconds into the middle frame as Joey Lies stole the puck in the offensive zone and squeezed a shot through Warman goaltender Griffin Wright that just barely trickled over the goal line. Less than two minutes later, Ryder Mucha scored another unassisted marker, pushing the lead to three.

The Bombers continued to control play for most of the period but Wright held firm, keeping the Wolverines within striking distance, and strike back they did early in the third with Kane Kennedy extending his goal-scoring streak to four games and his point streak to five as he beat Werner for his 12th tally of the season.

But that’s as close as the Wolverines would get as the Bombers shut them down the rest of the way aided by a pair of Warman penalties that stole precious time from the comeback effort. Flin Flon finished the night with a 50-20 shots advantage as Werner won his first SJHL start with 19 stops while Wright was stuck with the loss despite a 47-save effort. The Bombers were 0-for-4 on the power play and the Wolverines failed to score on their lone man advantage of the evening.

The victory moves Flin Flon back into top spot in the UPL Division at 13-7-0-1 while Warman remains in fourth place in the Nutrien Division as they fall to 6-14-0-2.

The Wolverines return to action on Saturday when they visit the Nipawin Hawks, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans can listen to the live broadcast on SaskNow.com.
