The Warman Wolverines tightened their defence but couldn’t produce at the other end of the ice as they fell 3-0 to the Melville Millionaires at the Warman Home Centre Communiplex on Wednesday.

Matt Spencer-Dahl recorded a shutout in his SJHL debut and Kale Margolis netted two goals as the Millionaires scored once in each period to even the season series between the two teams at one win apiece.

After suffering a 10-1 loss to the Nipawin Hawks in their last game, the Wolverines were determined to show a stronger defensive front against the Millionaires. While they did a better job of defending the middle of their zone, Melville’s strong cycle game still allowed the visitors to control the action in the first period, outshooting Warman 15-5 and taking a 1-0 lead on a Keil Schmalz goal just over four minutes in.

Neither team was penalized in the opening frame but it was a different story in the second as they combined for 44 penalty minutes, highlighted by a scrap between Brodie Scopick and Yibin Yoo that earned both players five minutes for fighting and a game misconduct. Scopick received an extra two minutes for instigating and 13 seconds later, Wylie Smith was whistled for charging, giving the Millionaires a 5-on-3 power play on which Margolis converted to push the lead to 2-0.

Margolis struck again in the third, stealing the puck in the neutral zone before racing down the left wing and beating Taye Timmerman to complete the scoring. The Wolverines netminder finished the night with 26 saves.

Meanwhile it was a debut to remember for Spencer-Dahl, who stopped 23 shots to earn the shutout in his first start since being acquired a day earlier from the Winnipeg Monarchs of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League.

Melville’s power play scored once on six opportunities while Warman failed to capitalize on three chances with the man advantage. The Wolverines have lost three straight games and remain in fourth place in the Nutrien Division with a 6-16-2 record. The Millionaires are fourth in the Bunge Division, improving to 10-11-3 with the win.

Despite taking the loss against Melville, it’s been a positive week for Warman goaltender Taye Timmerman. On Tuesday, the Winnipeg, Man., native was one of six SJHL players named to Team Canada West for the upcoming Junior A World Challenge.

The tournament, which features the top talent in Canadian Junior A hockey split into two squads plus teams from the United States and Sweden, takes place Dec. 7-13 in Trois Rivières, Que.

The 22 players on Team Canada West come from the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s four western representatives — the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, Manitoba Junior Hockey League and Superior International Junior Hockey League.

Joining Timmerman from the SJHL are defencemen Jaxon Herchak (Kindersley Klippers), Thomas Ries (Yorkton Terriers), and Tao Flory (Melfort Mustangs), and forwards Rylan Hue (Humboldt Broncos) and Wyatt Stinton (Flin Flon Bombers). The team will be coached by Melfort Mustangs bench boss Trevor Blevins.
