Oh So Close

Mustangs lose late lead against Hawks, drop fourth straight

Nov 29, 2025 | 4:33 PM

The Melfort Mustangs were oh so close to snapping their three-game losing streak on Friday night.

Mustangs’ assistant captain, Austin Shepherd, scored his third of the season just eight minutes and 51 seconds into the game, giving his team the early lead.

Unfortunately for Melfort, however, that power play marker, assisted by Tristin Ziola and Danton Cox, was all the offence they could muster on the night.

For a majority of the evening, it seemed like the Stangs could pull out a 1-0 victory, as netminder Kason Kobelka held strong, and the club’s penalty kill went 5-for-5.

With exactly two minutes to play, though, the Hawks made their move, pulling goaltender Gage Roberts to make it 6-on-5 with the extra attacker.

Fifty-one seconds later, it was hometown captain Finley Radloff who tied the game for Nipawin, evening up the score at 1-1 with his sixth of the season.

That goal would push the third meeting of the season between the two clubs into overtime, where Hawks’ forward Eric Hoiness found himself on a breakaway, burying his sixth of the season for the extra frame winner.

A tough loss for the Blue and Green, as their skid has been extended to four games, while simultaneously remaining winless against their bitter rival this year.

The Mustangs will get another crack at the can on Saturday night, however, as they welcome in the Warman Wolverines to town.

Each organization has seen the other once in their own barn this campaign, with the home club coming away victorious in both instances.

Tonight’s contest will wrap up Melfort’s annual parent-billet weekend, with the teddy bear toss and Calcutta shootout scheduled for the evening.

Puck drop will occur at 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
